Written in 1848 by Shaker elder Joseph Brackett, the traditional American song “Simple Gifts” is celebrated for its minimalist lyrics and lively melody reflecting humility and simplicity. The song gained widespread modern fame after Aaron Copland incorporated the melody into his 1944 ballet Appalachian Spring and Sydney Carter adapted it into the hymn “Lord of the Dance”.
