Cruising down the highways of Los Santos is one of the greatest pleasures in Grand Theft Auto V, but even the game’s stellar soundtrack can get repetitive after hundreds of hours of play. Fortunately, Rockstar Games included a built-in feature for PC players called Self Radio. This allows you to import your own MP3s and seamlessly integrate them into the game, complete with real-world commercials, DJ commentary, and news updates.
Here is a complete, step-by-step guide to setting up your own custom radio station in GTA 5.
Step 1: Gather and Prepare Your Audio Files
Before diving into the game folders, you need to have your music files ready on your computer.
Supported Formats: GTA 5 officially supports .mp3, .wma, and .m4a formats.
Minimum Requirement: You need to have at least 3 audio files in the folder for the game to recognize it as a valid radio station.
Pro-Tip: Make sure your audio files have proper metadata (Title and Artist tags). The game will actually display the song names on the in-game HUD when the track changes!
Step 2: Locate the “User Music” Folder
Rockstar creates a specific folder inside your Windows user directory just for this purpose. Open your Windows File Explorer. Navigate to your Documents folder. Open the Rockstar Games folder, then click into GTA V. Inside, you will see a folder named User Music. The full file path typically looks like this:
C:UsersYourUsernameDocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VUser Music
Step 3: Add Your Songs (The Smart Way)
While you can copy and paste your actual music files directly into the User Music folder, this takes up unnecessary hard drive space. Instead, use shortcuts. Go to the folder where your music is normally stored.
Select the songs or albums you want, right-click them, and select Copy. Go back to the User Music folder.
Right-click inside the empty space and select Paste shortcut.
This tells the game exactly where to find the music without duplicating your files.
Step 4: Scan for Music In-Game
Once your files or shortcuts are in place, you need to tell GTA 5 to index them. Launch GTA V and load into Story Mode or GTA Online. Pause the game and navigate to the Settings tab. Select Audio from the left-hand menu.
Scroll down to the bottom and click on Perform Full Scan for Music (or Perform Quick Scan if you just added one or two tracks).
The game will freeze for a brief moment while it processes your library.
Step 5: Customize Your Listening Experience
Right above the scan options in the Audio menu, you will see a setting called Self Radio Mode. You can customize how your custom station behaves:
Radio: This is the most immersive option. It plays your tracks interspersed with authentic GTA advertisements, banter from radio DJs, and news reports about the crimes you just committed in-game.
Sequential: Plays your custom tracks back-to-back in the exact alphabetical order of their file names.
Random: Shuffles your music library back-to-back without any DJ interruptions or commercials.
Step 6: Hit the Road
Get into any vehicle, open up your radio wheel, and scroll until you find Self Radio (it usually appears right next to the classic rock or pop stations).
If you are driving and want to skip a track that doesn’t fit the current high-speed chase vibe, simply press the = key (equal sign) on your keyboard to skip to the next song in your queue. Happy driving!
