TikTok is all about the music. While the app offers a massive library of trending tracks, using your own unique audio—whether it is an original song, a voiceover, or a custom sound effect—can make your content stand out.
Adding a custom song to TikTok is straightforward. You can upload your audio directly using the built-in microphone or use third-party editing tools to pair your track with video files before posting.
Method 1: The Direct Upload Method
The easiest way to get a custom song onto TikTok is by playing it from another device while recording or using the application’s native upload feature.
Prepare your audio: Play your custom song on an external speaker or a second device.
Open TikTok: Tap the + (plus) icon at the bottom of the screen to open the camera interface.
Record your video: Press the red record button while your custom song plays clearly in the background.
Finalise the sound: Tap the checkmark icon once you are done. In the editing screen, tap the Volume icon and make sure “Original Sound” is turned up.
Post your video: Add your captions, hashtags, and hit post. Your video will now feature your custom track as the “Original Sound.”
Method 2: The Video Editor Method (Best Quality)
If you want pristine audio quality without background noise, the best approach is to combine your custom song with a video file using a video editing app before opening TikTok. Editing Platform Workflow Summary CapCut Seamless integration with TikTok

Securing and Renaming Your Custom Track
Once your video is live with your custom audio, you can rename the track so other users can discover it or use it in their own videos.
Tap the spinning vinyl record icon in the bottom right corner of your published video.
Tap the Edit or pencil icon next to the default “Original Sound” title. Type in your Song Title – Artist Name and save it.
Note: You can only rename an original sound once, so double-check your spelling!
Important Copyright Considerations
TikTok’s automated systems actively scan uploaded videos for copyrighted material. To ensure your custom audio does not get muted or taken down:
Ensure you own the rights to the music or have an explicit commercial license.
Avoid uploading mainstream music tracks disguised as custom audio.
Keep your custom tracks under 60 seconds to minimize the risk of automated flags and to keep your content snappy and engaging. If you want to take this a step further, let me know:
