Written in 1848 by Elder Joseph Brackett, the Shaker song “Simple Gifts” is a timeless anthem of gratitude, humility, and minimalism. Its narrow vocal range and dance-oriented rhythm were originally designed for communal worship, allowing everyone to participate easily. Today, the enduring tune is celebrated worldwide, famously popularized by Aaron Copland in Appalachian Spring and adapted into various musical traditions.
