Written in 1848 by Elder Joseph Brackett for the Shaker community in Alfred, Maine, “Simple Gifts” is a beloved American folk song that pairs a deceptively simple, uplifting melody with a profound philosophy of humility and freedom. Originally composed as a functional dance tune to accompany Shaker worship, the song’s A-B binary musical structure and repetitive lyrical cues (like “turn, turn”) guided the physical movements of the congregation. It achieved mainstream global prominence in 1944 when Aaron Copland prominently featured the melody in his Pulitzer Prize-winning ballet score, Appalachian Spring. Today, the tune remains a cornerstone of American music, later famously adapted into the Christian hymn “Lord of the Dance.”
