How to Add Your Own Custom Songs to Apple Music: A Complete Guide

While streaming services offer access to tens of millions of tracks, they don’t have everything. Rare bootlegs, local indie releases, personalized voice memos, or underground mixtapes often slip through the cracks of official music catalogs. Fortunately, Apple Music allows you to seamlessly integrate your personal audio files directly into your cloud library alongside its massive streaming catalog.

Once uploaded, your custom songs will stream across all your devices, including your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Here is exactly how to do it.

Step 1: Prepare Your Audio Files

Before starting, ensure your custom audio files are in a format that Apple Music can read and process. Apple Music natively supports several file types: AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) MP3 AIFF WAV

Apple Lossless (ALAC)

If your files are in an unsupported format (like FLAC or OGG), you will need to use an audio converter to change them into a high-quality format like MP3 or ALAC before proceeding.

Step 2: Import the Files to Your Computer

The actual uploading process must be done using a desktop computer. You cannot upload audio files directly from the Apple Music app on an iPhone or iPad.

Open the Apple Music app on your Mac, or the Apple Music/iTunes app on your Windows PC.

In the menu bar, click on File and select Import (or Add to Library depending on your operating system version).

Browse your local storage, select the audio files or the entire folder you want to add, and click Open.

The tracks will now appear in your local library under the “Recently Added” tab.

Step 3: Edit the Metadata (Optional but Recommended)

To prevent your custom songs from looking like messy, unorganized files in your library, it is highly recommended to update their metadata. This ensures they sort correctly by artist, album, and track number.

Right-click on the imported song or album and select Get Info (or Properties).

Under the Details tab, fill in the Track Title, Artist, Album Name, Genre, and Year.

Switch to the Artwork tab, click Add Artwork, and choose a JPEG or PNG image from your computer to serve as the album cover. Click OK to save your changes.

Step 4: Turn on Sync Library

To make these tracks available on your mobile devices, you must ensure that Apple’s cloud matching service is active.

On Mac: Go to Music > Settings (or Preferences) > General and ensure the Sync Library box is checked.

On Windows: Go to Edit > Preferences > General and check Sync Library (or iCloud Music Library).

On iPhone/iPad: Open your device’s main Settings > Apps > Music and verify that Sync Library is toggled on.

Step 5: Upload and Match

Once Sync Library is enabled, Apple Music will automatically scan your newly added tracks. It will do one of two things:

Match: If Apple Music recognizes the song in its official catalog, it will “match” your file and stream Apple’s official version to your other devices.

Upload: If the track is unique (like a personal recording), it will physically upload your audio file to your private iCloud Storage space.

To check the status of your songs, you can change your desktop view to “Songs,” right-click the column headers, and enable Cloud Status. It will show “Matched,” “Uploaded,” or “Waiting.” Once the status changes from “Waiting,” your custom tracks are fully live in your cloud ecosystem.

Step 6: Stream on Your Mobile Devices

Open the Apple Music app on your iPhone or iPad. Go to your Library, and you will find your custom music sitting perfectly alongside your streamed playlists. You can stream them over cellular data, add them to your existing playlists, or download them directly to your device for offline listening.
