Wake up to your favorite track: How to set a custom song as your iPhone alarm

Waking up to the default iPhone alarm sound—the infamous, heart-racing “Radar”—is a universally stressful experience. Fortunately, Apple allows you to replace that jarring digital siren with any song from your personal music library. Customizing your morning soundtrack is an excellent way to start your day on a more positive, personalized note.

Whether you want to wake up to an energetic rock anthem, a calming lo-fi beat, or a nostalgic movie theme, setting a custom song on your iPhone is a straightforward process. Here is everything you need to know to change your alarm sound to your favorite track.

How to set a song as your iPhone alarm

To use a custom song, the track must be downloaded locally to your device via the Apple Music app. This includes songs purchased from the iTunes Store, music synced from your computer, or tracks downloaded through an active Apple Music subscription. Follow these steps to change your alarm sound:

Open the Clock app on your iPhone and tap the Alarm tab at the bottom of the screen.

Select an alarm to edit by tapping it, or tap the plus (+) sign in the top-right corner to create a new one.

Tap the Sound option located in the middle of the settings menu.

Scroll down past the ringtones section until you see the Songs category. Tap Pick a song.

Your music library will open. Browse through your playlists, artists, albums, or songs to find the track you want.

Tap the song to select it. A checkmark will appear next to the title, and the track will briefly play a preview.

Tap the Back button in the top-left corner, and then tap Save to apply your changes.

Troubleshooting common issues

If your custom song isn’t playing in the morning, a few common settings might be interfering with your Clock app.

The song plays as a default sound: If your iPhone reverts to a standard ringtone, check if the song is fully downloaded. Open the Music app, find the track, and ensure the cloud download icon is not visible next to it. Streaming-only songs will not play as alarms if your network connection drops overnight.

The alarm is completely silent: Double-check your device volume. The alarm volume is tied to your system “Ringer and Alerts” volume, which can be adjusted in Settings > Sounds & Haptics. If the “Change with Buttons” toggle is turned on, you may have accidentally muted your alarm using the physical volume keys on the side of your phone.

Lossless or Dolby Atmos issues: Occasionally, high-resolution audio formats can cause glitching in the Clock app. If a song refuses to play, try downloading a standard-quality version of the track specifically for your alarm.

Choosing the right morning soundtrack

The song you choose sets the tone for your entire day. While a heavy metal track might blast you awake instantly, it can leave you feeling startled. Conversely, an acoustic ballad might blend into your dreams and cause you to oversleep.

Look for tracks that feature a gradual crescendo—songs that start quiet and progressively build in volume and tempo. It is also worth noting a classic piece of advice: avoid choosing your absolute favorite song of all time. Over exposure every single morning at 6:00 AM has a funny way of turning a beloved track into a sound you will eventually grow to dislike.
