Written in 1848 by Elder Joseph Brackett Jr. in a Maine Shaker community, “Simple Gifts” (or “Tis a Gift to Be Simple”) originated as an a cappella “quick dance” song meant to accompany physical worship. Its concise lyrics reflect core Shaker values of humility, community, and modest living, acting as both a spiritual manifesto and choreographic guide. Though once confined to insular Shaker communities, the melody gained global fame after composer Aaron Copland incorporated it into his 1944 ballet Appalachian Spring. It has since endured as an American folk classic, adapted into modern hymns like “Lord of the Dance” and performed at major historical events.
